Five for Friday/Saturday! 8/16/14

August 16, 2014 by Amber Masters

OH.MY.WORD. We started school this week and I don’t think I’ve ever been so tired…well maybe last year at this time! I feel like I’ve been doing nothing but modeling this week. Sooooooooooo much modeling!! It will all be worth it when they’re independent in a few weeks!  Any who, I missed Five for Friday with Doddle Bugs Teaching last night because I just couldn’t keep my eyes open any longer, so I’m linking up just a little late 🙂

In addition to it being the first week of school, my Corbin and I celebrated our anniversary on August 14th. I can’t believe it has been 4 years (we’ve been together for 11)! He truly is my best friend and my biggest supporter. I’m a lucky lady 🙂

My wonderful husband picked the best time of year to start ripping up our flooring…..NOT! We currently have plywood sub floor all through our kitchen! NO BIG DEAL 🙂

Seriously, I shouldn’t complain. I thought he was going to break his back getting the layers of linoleum off. Bless his heart, he’s a keeper. I MUST stop complaining!

We have our new floors! But it’s probably going to take a long while to get them in! We carried in 111 boxes last night! I am crazy sore but super excited that they are here!!

Awhile back  I posted the note I am going to send home when my students move to yellow. I thought it was really important that parents understand that we want to make it a teachable moment and that students need to reflect on their actions. The other teachers at my school thought the same thing, but didn’t really think the “oops” note was appropriate for the upper elementary grades. So, I talked with them and created one that is a little different for the older students but still focuses on the reflection piece.

On the second day of kindergarten we read Pete the Cat Rocking in My School Shoes .

I LOVE Pete and so do all of my kids! We read the book, rocked out to the song and went on a tour of our school. I taught them how to use clipboards and we used these checklists during our tour. The kids loved this!  They felt so “official” walking through the hallways, holding their clipboards and doing real school work!

I am humbled and grateful to have had the opportun I am humbled and grateful to have had the opportunity to visit St. Jude Children’s Hospital campus this week for the second time. Each experience has brought a range of emotions, and a desire to do more.

Noticing families out and about on campus, and knowing they’re going through what no family should ever have to go through, is nothing short of gut wrenching. Yet, you also see strength, bravery, and perseverance, as children and families continue forward in their journeys.

There’s also an overwhelming sense of community, family, and hope. Hearing from former patients and their families, ignites a fire in you to spread awareness, and join the fight in ending childhood cancer. St. Jude promises not to stop until no child dies from cancer.

Each staff member I’ve encountered at St. Jude is invested in the mission, and is an incredible human being. I’m grateful for their passion to serve others, their wealth of knowledge, and their willingness to share the amazing work that’s being done at St. Jude.

Together, we will make a difference. ❤️ If you’d like to support St. Jude, but aren’t sure where to start or how to get involved, send me a DM and I can share some ideas!
