Have Fun, Molly Lou Melon by Patty Lovell.
This book is fabulous!!
Let me tell you a little about this book. I was first introduced to Molly Lou Melon from my lovely friend Katie. She teaches second grade in a district close to mine. She told me about one of her favorite stories, Stand Tall, Molly Lou Melon (another awesome book!) and I was hooked. I got a copy and shared it with my students right away. This fall at the scholastic book fair Iย noticed Have Fun, Molly Lou Melon. I picked it up right away, and read it. I knew my kinders would love it.
Molly Lou Melon’s grandmother taught her to always be happy with herself. She also taught her how to use her imagination. Her grandmother told her about all of the toys she would make out of the random objects she found. Molly Lou Melon began using her imagination and followed in her grandmother’s footsteps.
A new girl moves in next door, (Gertie) and she lives in the modern world with every over-the-top toy a child would want! Molly Lou Melon teaches Gertie how to use her imagination. Gertie becomes a believer and soon the girls are exhausted from their make-believe world!
This is an amazing book to encourage students to get creative and use their imagination. After reading this story, we went outside for an extra recess (which we never seem to have time for!) and they used their imagination. It was so inspiring to watch the students. They were pretending they were firefighters at a firehouse and they were leaving to go put out a fire! This story opened up so many opportunities in writing workshop!
