As the school year is coming to an end, I find myself reevaluating so many things in my classroom. I’m thinking of all the organizational changes I want to make, and about the new cutesy things I will display in my room next year. One of the areas that I think we all need to reevaluate, is how we keep our kids safe. I hate that this is even a discussion but nonetheless it is the most important part of our job. I am so thankful for our principal because he is crazy about school safety. Every day he does perimeter checks to ensure that all of our doors are locked. He encourages us to practice and talk about all safety situations with our students. We have safety bags placed in every classroom, just in case. Our local police department offers PD to the teachers a few times a year and helps us understand the best ways to protect our students. With all of that being said, I am grateful to teach in a safe area. Unfortunately, we all know that doesn’t always seem to matter.
We also have school wide sub-folders with detailed information for every “safety” situation. In addition, I keep a class list on a magnetic clip by my classroom door, along with tornado and fire information.It is in one of those plastic dry erase covers. The magnetic clip allows for super easy, and quick removal. I just grab it on my way out the door, and then I can take attendance easily. It is up high enough so that the students can’t reach it.
