We recently started our unit on informational writing. It’s so fun to see the wonderful ideas the kids come up with! They love writing for a purpose and are so eager to teach others about things they know so much about. We started the unit by exploring some different informational texts. One of my favorite mentor texts for this unit is “How to Heal a Broken Wing” by Bob Graham. The illustrations are breathtaking and my students really connect with the little boy in this story. If you haven’t check it out, make sure you do!!
Since, we’ve started this unit, I feel like my students’ writing has become so much better!! It’s amazing how a new topic can get the kids so excited and focused. After we explore mentor texts and talk about the difference between informational and narrative writing, we take a look at the planning sheet. I think the planning sheet is key because it helps them see each separate step. I start everyone out with 3 step stories. As my higher writers become ready, I offer them planning sheets and booklets without the numbered steps.
